The Halloween Reset: Why October Is the Best Month to Reorganize
There is a window every year, roughly October 15 to October 31, that is the single best time of year to reorganize your jewelry. Not just for symbolic reasons. For three very practical ones.
Reason 1: You can see what you have for the next two months
The two highest jewelry-wearing months of the year are November (Thanksgiving, family gatherings, early holiday parties) and December (the entire month is dressier than the rest of the calendar).
If you wait until December to figure out what’s where, you’ll spend the wearing season untangling drawers instead of enjoying parties. If you do it in mid-October, you have your entire collection sorted, displayed, and visible for the busiest jewelry-wearing two months of the year.
It’s exactly like prepping a fall wardrobe, you do it before you need to wear the wool blazer, not the morning of.
Reason 2: The end-of-year inventory matters for taxes and insurance
If your insurance schedules your jewelry separately (and it should, if you have anything above $2,500 retail value), most policies renew on a calendar year. December is the wrong time to figure out what you have; the policy is already in force.
October gives you eight to ten weeks to:
- Photograph current pieces
- Get appraisals updated for anything significant
- Adjust your scheduled-jewelry rider for the new year
- Document anything that needs to be reported for tax purposes (a high-value gift received that year, an estate piece inherited, etc.)
The IRS doesn’t care when you do your jewelry inventory. The fall is just when you have the bandwidth.
Reason 3: Holiday gifts are coming
Whatever pieces arrive in November and December, gifts, surprise heirlooms passed down at Thanksgiving, anniversary pieces, need somewhere to go. If your storage is already a disaster going in, the new pieces become part of the disaster.
If your storage is organized going in, every new piece finds a home immediately.
This is the part most women don’t think about until late January, when they realize the December gifts are still in their original boxes on the dresser.
The October Reset, in three Sundays
Here’s how to do it without losing your weekends:
Sunday 1 (early October): The dump
Pull out everything. Bed, floor, table. See your collection at once. Sort into the three piles from August’s audit (wear weekly, wear yearly, wear never).
Sunday 2 (mid October): The photograph + appraisal
Photograph every piece individually. For pieces above $1,000 retail, get an updated written appraisal from a local jeweler this week (most do them for $50-100). Email the photographs to yourself.
Sunday 3 (late October): The relocation
Put every piece in its final home. If you have Bella Cache, this is when you finalize which pocket holds which piece, and you commit to that system. If you don’t, this is when you decide which pieces deserve a non-bedroom hiding place.
Three Sundays. Three hours total. The most useful thing you can do for your jewelry collection this year.
What changes after
In November and December, you will:
- Find every piece in under ten seconds
- Wear pieces you’d forgotten you had
- Have a current insurance inventory for the new year
- Have somewhere immediate to put any holiday-gifted piece
You will not, in January, find pieces still in their original gift boxes on the dresser. That alone is worth the three Sundays.
Hidden in plain sight. Loved in private.
Next week: Costume vs. real, and why knowing which is which matters more than you think.
